Children Series

“The child as artistic subject dates back to the Renaissance and beyond. The major artist of the near past that have worked with children as subject are Mary Cassatt, Norman Rockwell, Carl Larson and Kathe Kollwitz. Each one of these artists approached the subject in his or her own unique way. Cassatt like Raphael expressed the love and bond between mother and child. Rockwell and Larson expressed childish innocence, mischievousness and directness. Kathe Kollwitz struck home the subjects frailty and vulnerability through fear, sorrow and pain that a child might suffer during war. I use children subject matter as a visual metaphor to convey psychological, social, philosophical concepts and speculations. My work at times is intended to shock, stir reflection, create laughter, and even a sense of love and dearness. The underpinning in this artwork is to evoke a feeling of the inner child. A child of strength, anxiety, tenderness and love looking out from within at our – this specific moment in time.”
